The Role that Music Plays
Prelude
We begin by providing background music as guests arrive.  Just as your venue, flowers and color scheme help create a visual mood for your wedding, the music you choose will provide a soundtrack and vibe ranging from celebratory and joyful to reverent and profound.  Prelude typically begins 15-30 minutes prior to the wedding’s listed start time.

Processional
These songs are usually played for the entrance of Family, Bridal Party, and the Bride.  Processionals can range from one to three or more songs depending on the size of the wedding party.  Some ceremonies such as Catholic Masses and Jewish Ceremonies include additional selections, and a growing trend is for the groom to have his own song.

Ceremony
Music during the ceremony is very appropriate for rituals like Unity Candle, Sand Ceremony, Rose Ceremony or Communion.  You might also like to have a special song performed by one of our vocalists—or by someone who is close to you.  We are always happy to accompany a guest musician.  For Catholic Weddings that are following the full mass, music plays an important role in the different parts of the service.  In contrast, some weddings do not have any music taking place during the ceremony itself and that is a very acceptable way to keep things short and sweet.

Recessional & Postlude
After “I now pronounce you man and wife,” the Recessional music plays as the bride and groom exit the ceremony site, followed by the bridal party and  family.  One to two songs is typical.  Following these specific selections, live postlude music is played until the guests have all been excused from the ceremony site.  This can range from 5 to 10 minutes.

Reception

Cocktail Hour
Now it’s time to kick back and celebrate!  Bride and groom might be stealing away for some quiet time or some more photos but guests are ready to mingle.  Live music for cocktail hours really adds energy and a classy touch.  Classical music from the ceremony can give way to Jazz Standards or even Upbeat Irish and Bluegrass music.  Instrumental music is always great but don’t be afraid of adding vocals:  people won’t feel like it’s a concert and our vocalists are not expecting an audience.  The idea here is creating energy.

Dinner Hour
Live music for the dinner hour really makes for a lasting memory of an elegant event.  In this age of “digital and virtual everything,” having living, breathing musicians responding to the mood of the reception and creating a relaxed air of celebration over which guests can easily converse just takes the whole event to another level.  Consider having a few songs played for specific guests or choosing songs that are meaningful to you but not necessarily great for dancing.

Dancing & Reception
The types of music Effesenden Music specializes in for receptions include:  Jazz, Country, Bluegrass & Irish (Celtic), Some Classic Rock, Light Pop and Eclectic.  We can happily recommend to you colleagues in the industry who offer more rock, 80’s, R&B and other styles.  If you want mostly live music with a few things that just aren’t going to work with our ensemble, we are happy to blast your I-pod playlist from our sound system during one of our breaks.  This is a great way to have lots of options!
